    The Handle

God made us in his image and wants us draw close to Him. The handle is where the maker expects your hand to rest; it is shaped so you can actually use the knife. In the same way, God created us for Himself, to know Him and walk with Him, not to live apart from Him. We were made for a relationship with the One who designed us, not to be thrown in a drawer and forgotten. Just like the handle was shaped for a hand, you were shaped for a relationship with God.

    The Tang

A strong hunting knife has a full tang running through the handle; if the tang is cracked, the whole knife is compromised even if the outside looks good. That’s a picture of sin: our problem isn’t just a few bad choices on the surface; it runs through the core of who we are. We’ve all fallen short of God’s glory, and no amount of good works can fix the fracture. Even if the scales look good, a cracked tang means failure under pressure.

    The Bolster

The bolster sits between your hand and the edge so you don’t slide forward and get cut. Jesus stepped in as our guard, placing Himself between us and the judgment our sin deserves. On the cross He took the blow of God’s righteous wrath so we wouldn’t have to. This guard keeps our hand from running onto the blade. At the cross, Jesus put Himself between us and the penalty for our sin, taking the cut we deserved.

    The Spine

The spine gives the blade its strength; if the spine is soft or weak, the knife will bend and fail when you lean on it. The strength of the gospel is not our resolve but Christ’s finished work—His perfect life, His death for our sins, and His resurrection on the third day. That historical, once‑for‑all event is what can bear the full weight of our trust. When we cut with our knives, we trust the spine not to fail. When we trust Jesus, we are putting our trust in His strength.

    The Edge

The edge does the real work: cutting, shaping, and cleaning. Scripture calls God’s Word “sharper than any two‑edged sword,” exposing what’s really in our hearts and showing us our need for a Savior. The same Word also brings healing truth—promising forgiveness, new life, and peace through Jesus. A dull edge just scrapes; a sharp edge cuts cleanly. God's Word cuts through excuses, shows us our sins, and then shows us the promise: Everyone who believes in Jesus will be saved.

    The Point/Tip

The tip focuses all the force of the blade in one spot; it’s where intent becomes impact. The gospel also comes to a point: you and I must respond. God offers salvation as a gift in Christ, but He calls each person to turn from sin and trust Jesus as Lord and Savior. Scripture says that if we believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, we will be saved. Every knife comes to a point where it makes contact. The gospel does too! Trust God's hand and what Jesus did.

    The Sheath

Finally, the sheath protects the knife and carries it with purpose. When someone trusts Christ, God doesn’t just forgive; He gives them a new identity, protection, and a mission—to walk with Him and share this good news with others. They become, in a sense, a tool in the Maker’s hand, carried by Him into the situations where He wants to work. A good knife in the right sheath stays sharp and ready. When you come to Jesus, He forgives you, makes you new, and carries you into a new life with Him.
